How to practise listening for the TEFAQ or TCF

Practice tips, not facts about the exam: this is our own method.

Short answer : Listen first without reading the transcript, answer the question, read the explanation, then listen again while following the transcript. If a passage escapes you, slow the voice down, then return to normal speed. In the exam you often get only one listen, so train to answer on the first.

The five moves

  1. Read the question before listening. The TEF sample booklet gives 5 to 10 seconds of reading before each document (see the fiche). Know what you are looking for: a reason, a place, an opinion?
  2. Listen once, without the transcript. Our transcript is hidden by default so you are not tempted to read.
  3. Answer, then read the explanation. It points to the sentence that gives the answer and why the other options do not fit.
  4. Listen again with the transcript. Spot the words you did not catch.
  5. Slow down if needed. The player offers a slower speed. Then go back to normal speed.

Common traps

A wrong option often reuses a word you heard with a different meaning. In the library announcement (EX04), for example, you hear “ouvrira à dix heures plutôt qu’à neuf heures”, but also “fermera plus tard” and “le dimanche”: these details feed the wrong options. Read the explanations to learn to spot these traps.

A realistic routine

Ten to fifteen minutes a day beats one long weekly session. Alternate: an exam-style item (short dialogues, interviews), then an everyday dialogue such as At the corner store for your Québec ear.

A limit to know: your device’s synthetic voice is not an exam recording. It helps you practise but does not replace authentic documents.
