Motorcycle: is riding between lanes (lane splitting) allowed in Québec?
Riding up between rows of cars: what the SAAQ says.
Short answer: No. The SAAQ lists riding between two rows of vehicles in adjacent lanes (lane splitting) among the manoeuvres prohibited for motorcycles.
Prohibited manoeuvres listed by the SAAQ
- Between two rows of vehicles travelling in adjacent lanes (lane splitting).
- Between the edge of the roadway and another vehicle travelling in the same lane.
- Between a row of moving vehicles and a row of parked vehicles in the same lane.
- On sidewalks.
- On bicycle paths.
To remember
These bans are about safety: a vehicle may change lanes or open a door without seeing you. The exact Code articles are not cited here because the LégisQuébec page was not accessible when this was written.
To remember for the test
- Lane splitting (between two rows of cars): prohibited.
- Also prohibited: on sidewalks and bicycle paths.
