Required motorcycle gear in Québec
What the SAAQ requires for training and tests, and what the law says about the helmet and eye protection.
Short answer: For training and tests: a helmet that meets standards, a visor or goggles, a long-sleeved shirt or jacket, long pants with no holes, gloves that completely cover the hands, boots or closed-toe shoes.
For training and tests
- A helmet that meets safety standards.
- A visor or protective goggles (on the lists for road training and the road test; not on the closed-track test list).
- A long-sleeved shirt or jacket.
- Long pants with no holes, tears or significant wear.
- Gloves that completely cover the hands.
- Boots or closed-toe shoes.
If you are not wearing all the mandatory gear, you cannot take the closed-track test.
What the law says
Anyone riding a motorcycle must wear a helmet that meets a recognized standard and carries the manufacturer’s mark. A motorcycle rider also needs eye protection when the speed limit is above 50 km/h; if the helmet has no visor, that means protective glasses.
Recommended by the SAAQ
A full-face helmet and brightly coloured protective clothing made of leather or abrasion-resistant material.
To remember for the test
- A compliant helmet for the rider and the passenger.
- Gloves that completely cover the hands; boots or closed-toe shoes.
- Eye protection above 50 km/h if the helmet has no visor.
