Moped or scooter licence (Class 6D) in Quebec from age 14: the steps
Age, parental consent, the required course, the knowledge test, fees, and the rules for riders under 16.
Short answer: according to the SAAQ, you can get a Class 6D licence (moped or scooter) from age 14, with the written consent of a parent if you are under 18. You take a 6-hour course at a recognized driving school, then pass the vision test and the knowledge test (75%) at a service centre. Test: $13.50. Licence: $46.50.
What Class 6D allows
- A two- or three-wheeled moped or scooter with an electric motor or a gasoline engine of no more than 50 cc and an automatic transmission.
- Maximum speed of the vehicle: 70 km/h. Over 50 cc it is a motorcycle and needs a Class 6A, 6B or 6C licence (see the motorcycle classes).
- Already licensed? According to the SAAQ, a driver's licence or a probationary licence of any class except Class 8 (farm tractors) lets you ride a moped or scooter. The SAAQ does not mention the learner's licence: check with them.
Requirements
- Be at least 14 years old.
- Under 18: the written consent of your father, mother or legal guardian (the Consent of a Person Having Parental Authority form), which you also present at the knowledge test.
- Have your principal residence in Québec, and be a Canadian citizen or allowed to stay in Canada for more than six months.
The steps, in order
- The course (6 hours) at a driving school recognized by the SAAQ: 3 hours of theory, then 3 hours of practice on a closed track (the last hour is the evaluation). One instructor for at most 5 students. Gear required for the practice: an approved helmet, visor or goggles, long sleeves, long pants, gloves, boots or closed-toe shoes. The school sets the course price (the SAAQ does not publish it).
- The vision test and the knowledge test at an SAAQ service centre, by appointment. Bring the course completion attestation and, for a first licence, two identity documents the SAAQ accepts.
- Payment: cash, debit (not at every outlet), cheque or money order. Credit cards are not accepted.
The Class 6D knowledge test
- Three topics: the Highway Safety Code; road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals; moped and scooter riding behaviours and techniques.
- Passing mark: 75%. Length: about one hour.
- If you fail, wait at least 28 days before retaking it.
- The SAAQ does not publish the number of questions.
- Official study guide: the SAAQ's moped guide (“Conduire un cyclomoteur”).
